Mardi Gras

Tuesday 13 February 2024

We arrived in Trujillo on Saturday 10th February which was day 2 of their 5 day ‘Carnaval’. In other towns we’ve since driven to (Montánchez, Mérida, Cacares, Moraleja and Coria) it’s become apparent that the whole area is celebrating in the run up to Mardi Gras today. Schools are shut and today was a Bank Holiday in this particular autonomous region of Spain.

Everywhere we’ve been the locals have been sporting fancy dress costumes, enjoying live music in the plazas and just generally having a fun time. We’re not sure what the collective term for a group of Ali G’s is but they were quite comical.

I decided I should make some small effort to join in so this evening I managed to rustle up some pancakes on the small 2 ring hob in the van to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.

Apparently the ‘Carnaval’ traditionally ends with the Burial of the Sardine on Ash Wednesday. We’ll have to wait and see what that might entail. Watch this space!
